Pace is reported per whatever unit the distance was entered in. Enter 10 with Kilometers selected and 52:30 gives 5′ 15″ per km; enter the same 10 and the same time with Miles selected and it gives 5′ 15″ per mile, because ten miles in 52:30 is simply a different run. If you have a distance in one unit and want pace in the other, convert the distance before entering it - one mile is 1.609344 kilometres. To convert a pace you already have, multiply seconds per kilometre by 1.609344: the 315 above becomes about 507 seconds, or roughly 8 minutes 27 seconds per mile.
The same division run backwards answers the more common question. Multiply the pace in seconds by the distance to get the finish time, or divide a target time in seconds by the distance to get the pace you need. A 3:45:00 marathon is 13,500 seconds over 42.195 km, which the tool reports as 5′ 20″ per km. Five kilometres at 5′ 30″ per km comes to 27:30. Entering a planned distance and a target time is often more useful than entering a run you have already done.
The pace is rounded to the nearest whole second first and only then split into minutes and seconds, so the figure shown can sit up to half a second per unit away from the exact pace. Over a marathon, half a second per kilometre is about 21 seconds of finish time, which is worth knowing before pacing a race off a rounded number. Because the rounding happens before the split, a pace that rounds up to a full minute rolls over properly: two kilometres in 11:59 is 359.5 seconds per kilometre and displays as 6′ 00″ per km, not 5′ 60″.
It converts one distance and one elapsed time into one pace, and that is the whole scope. It does not report speed in kilometres or miles per hour, does not hold splits for individual segments, does not adjust for hills or altitude, and does not predict what you would run over a different distance. Race predictors that do that last one rest on assumptions about endurance that this arithmetic makes no claim about.
Divide the total elapsed time by the distance. Convert the time to seconds first so the division is clean: 52 minutes 30 seconds is 3,150 seconds, and over 10 kilometres that gives 315 seconds per kilometre, which is 5 minutes 15 seconds per kilometre. The calculator does exactly this and formats the result.
The label follows the Unit dropdown next to the distance field, and the tool reports pace in the same unit the distance was entered in. Set that dropdown to Kilometers and the pace is reported per kilometre. Nothing is converted behind the scenes, so the unit you pick and the distance you type have to describe the same run.
