How to Record Your Screen for Free — No Watermark, No Time Limit, No Download
You want to record a quick screen demo. Every free screen recorder you try does one of three things: slaps a watermark across it, cuts you off at five minutes, or makes you create an account first. The good desktop apps — Camtasia, Screen Studio — start around $100–300.
None of that is necessary anymore. Your browser can record your screen at 1080p, with audio, for as long as you want, and save the file straight to your computer — no download, no account, no watermark. Here’s how it works and how to do it.
Why the browser can do this now
Two built-in browser features do the heavy lifting. getDisplayMedia asks your permission and captures your screen, a window, or a single tab. MediaRecorder encodes that stream into a video file in real time. Because both run inside the browser, the recording is written to your machine as it happens — there’s no upload, because there’s nowhere to upload to. That’s also why there’s no time limit: nobody is paying to store your video.
How to record
- Open a browser-based recorder in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on a desktop.
- Choose what to capture — entire screen, a specific window, or just one tab.
- Pick your audio: microphone, system/tab audio, or both.
- Hit record. Do your thing. Pause and resume if you need to.
- Stop, and the video downloads to your computer as an MP4 or WebM.
What to check before you trust one
The whole appeal of a local recorder is that your screen — which might show private tabs, messages, or client work — never leaves your device. Confirm it the same way you’d check any tool: open DevTools → Network while you record. A genuinely local recorder makes no upload; if you see your video streaming out to a server, it isn’t local.
Two practical notes: browser recorders capture at your screen’s resolution, so record on the display you want the output to match; and system-audio capture is best supported in Chrome and Edge (Firefox is stronger on the microphone side).
